ANALYSIS + HIGHLIGHTS: CanWNT battle to well-earned draw vs. World Cup champs Spain (Oct. 25, 2024)

The Canadian women's national team battled it out to a 1-1 result against Spain on Friday at the Estadio Francisco de la Hera in Almendralejo, as Marie-Yasmine Alidou scored her first goal for country in her third appearance to propel her team to a draw against the FIFA World Cup champions.

A first-half defined by Kailen Sheridan's trademark saves and Spanish possession turned in Canada's favour in the second half as Evelyne Viens smartly pressured the Spanish backline, forcing a turnover in possession which she quickly transitioned into a quick-fire run at goal. Viens spotted Alidou's supporting run and passed the ball smartly to her teammate, who applied the cool finish to round out the sequence with a well-worked team goal.

Try as Spain might to beat both Sheridan and substitute Sabrina D'Angelo – who also made a number of great saves in the second half – Mimi's first Canada goal proved the difference between the two sides through much of the match, but for a late equalizer by Cristina Martín-Prieto in the 89th minute of play. It would be the last bit of action between the two teams, as Canada scored their first-ever goal against Spain, but still search for their first win against the hosts.
